Extremely attractive Victorian sterling silver Scottish plaid brooch with the crest and motto of the Dukes of Richmond. Edinburgh 1871. Maker: RN. The brooch has three bands of circular decoration and the centre is open. The outside band is of polished silver, decorated with Celtic scrolls and circles on a matted ground. The middle band is of plain polished silver on which is applied a circle of frosted silver ivy leaves. The inner band is applied and is of frosted silver. Applied onto this band is the motto of the Dukes of Richmond in polished silver letters. "EN LA ROSE JE FLEURI" (I flourish in the rose). Spanning the open centre is the cast crest of the Dukes of Richmond: a lion gardant, standing on a Cap of Maintenance, crowned with a ducal coronet and wearing a collar with two roses. Beneath the crest, on the inner band is an applied rose. The reverse of the brooch is plain. The full set of hallmarks is very clearly stamped near the lower edge of the reverse. A large pin is applied centrally. Engraved near the upper edge is "CAWDOR TO WALTER GORDON LENNOX,/ 1872".

In the year of this gift, the Earl of Cawdor was aged 27 and Walter Gordon-Lennox was aged 7. Walter, Charles Gordon-Lennox was the fourth and youngest son of Charles, Henry, 6th Duke of Richmond and 1st Duke of Gordon. In 1888-1894, Walter Gordon-Lennox was Member of Parliament for Chichester, Sussex. In 1891-1892, he was Treasurer of Her Majesty's Household. This very striking brooch is steeped in history and is in a virtually pristine state.
