| Wentworth, the Rockingham family seat was at Woodhouse in Yorkshire and Lord Rockingham was very much involved with York races. Although there was racing at York during the Roman times, the first race meeting at Knavesmire (which is the current York horseracing location) was in 1731. In 1754, the Marquis of Rockingham commissioned John Carr, a prominent Yorkshire builder, to erect the Stand at York racecourse for the Subscribers most of whom contributed towards the cost. This is the palladian facade shown on the obverse of the Racing Ticket. To this day, there is still a race run every October at York races carrying the Rockingham name. In 1805, the original silver racing tickets, which had been granted for 100 years, were renewed with octagonal badges in brass. 18th century Horseracing Tickets are extremely sought after, particularly if they have a provenance. | ||
