| This set is extremely smart and decorative in
appearance and the shells give it a very festive feel. It is in remarkably good
condition for its age. The set will blend in with any table service whatsoever
because it was very much the custom to have a dessert service at the end of the
meal which was in a totally different pattern to the rest of the table service.
There is also a great deal of versatility as the knife can be used on its own
for cheese and, to-day, the fork could be used on its own for the first course.
Moses Brent is an extremely well-known knife maker. He entered his first mark
on 11 July 1775 and his last (18th) on 18 February 1817. Brent had a virtual
monopoly as specialist in his field to the retail trade of his day. His skill
is reflected in the fact that his knives are constantly found accompanying
table service sets made by Eley, Fearn and Chawner as supplied to Paul Storr's
firm Rundell, Bridge and Rundell for all their best clients. |
