Very elegant Scottish set of 12 sterling silver Old
English teaspoons. Edinburgh 1806 by Robert Gray & Son of Glasgow. At the
top front end of each stem is engraved the initials of the contemporary owner,
J W. Beneath, each spoon is engraved with a consecutive number ranging from 1
to 12. The hallmarks on the reverse of the ends of the stems are all good and
clear.

These spoons have a simple elegance and balance
which is typical of the quality of Scottish silver and yet they are not at all
flimsy. It is not very often that one finds a full set of 12 such as these. The
practice of numbering teaspoons is typically Scottish and must have made the
butler's task of keeping track of teaspoons much easier.
