Very elegant pair of George III sterling silver
feather edge Old English sauce ladles with rounded bowls. London 1814 by
William Eley and William Fearn. The front of the very well balanced stems have
a band of feather edging engraved all around the edge. A family crest is
engraved at the end of the front of each stem of a mailed right arm holding a
cross. Above is a Scottish battle cry "PER MARE PER TERRAS". The
reverse of the stems are plain. The hallmarks are very clearly stamped at the
end of the reverse of each stem and consist of the Georgian head duty mark, the
date letter, the lion passant and the makers' mark. Maker :- William Eley & William Fearn
Condition :-Excellent condition with very
crisp hallmarks and engraving and a very pleasing patina

These sauce ladles are in such very good condition
and are rendered particularly elegant by their rounded bowls and feather edged
stems that they would grace any dining table and would make an excellent gift.
They would blend in quietly with whatever other tableware was in use. The
partnership of Eley & Fearn was very prolific in the making of high quality
flatware. They were part of the long dynasty of excellent silversmiths
specialising in flatware which started with George Smith in the last quarter of
the 18th century and ended with George Adams in the mid Victorian era.
