Click here for a larger image Very attractive George III Scottish snuff mull made from the curled end of a ram's horn and mounted with silver. Circa 1800. Not hallmarked. The top of the horn body is mounted with a plain silver band and a silver rim on which the lid rests. The lid is made of horn and is edged with a reeded silver band which has a thumb piece and a delicately crinkled upper edge. The lid is joined to the body with a silver hinge. In the centre of the lid is an applied silver circular disk which has not been engraved.
 
Condition :-Very good condition. Just a couple of small cracks in the horn at the top of the base but these are scarcely visible

Size :- 2.9 inches (7.4 cm) long x 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) at widest point
 
Snuff mulls are highly collectable and come in varying sizes and with various types of decoration. The decoration on the early ones is usually plain and fashioned rather crudely and this is one of their main charms. Most snuff mulls are not hallmarked.
