Beautifully modelled silver late19th century French
rowing prize medal, awarded at the Nautical Circle of Croisset 1888 Regattas.
Medallist: F. Vernon. This medal was given by Mr. J. E. Prenez, engineer and
Honourable President of the Circle. The medal is circular and has a fixed
suspension ring at the top. This ring is stamped on one side with a French
hallmark. The two sides of the medal were made separately and by a different
hand and then rivetted together. Obverse: Male figure rowing in a boat in the
foreground on choppy water. In the background, a boat of four and a boat of
eight rowers, each with a cox, rowing in different directions. In the far
distance are trees and the outlines of what are possibly buildings. Signed in
the exergue: F. VERNON. Reverse: Engraved around the inside of the rim: CERCLE
NAUTIQUE DE CROISSET REGATES DE 1888. In the centre, within a wreath of fruited
laurel leaves: OFFERTE/ PAR/ Mr. J.E. PRENEZ/ INGENIEUR/ President d'Honneur du
Cercle. In the centre, beneath the wreath, signed ROBINEAU PARIS. Two rivet
marks on either side of the wreath.
