Very plain and elegant George III sterling silver
oval snuff box with beautiful engraving on the lid. London 1795 by Roger Biggs.
The silver is plain throughout and the lift up lid is engraved in a typically
18th century flowing style:- Ann Medcalf Hertford. The lid is attached to the
box with a flat "hidden" hinge which is flush with the top of the
box. The inside of the box and of the lid has contemporary lemon coloured
gilding. The inside base of the box is struck with a full set of hallmarks,
while the inside of the lid is struck with the maker's mark and the lion
passant. The side of the box is struck with the lion passant on the outside.
All the hallmarks are good and clear with the exception of the lion passant on
the side which is slightly rubbed.

The simplicity of this box enhances the beauty of

to-day.
