This style of candlestick was extremely popular in
the middle part of the eighteenth century. The advantage of a cast candlestick
is that it is always of a much stronger gauge and the whole candlestick is made
of sterling silver with no filling whatsoever. John Cafe was apprenticed to
James Gould and so learned his craft from an outstanding candlestick maker.
John and his brother William appeared to have almost a monopoly as cast
candlestick makers during their time and their cast candlesticks were virtually
indistinguishable.
