Beautifully executed silver medal by Nicholas Briot issued at the Coronation of Charles I in Edinburgh on 18 June, 1633. Obverse: Bust of Charles I, looking left, crowned, in falling lace collar, ermine robes and collars of the Garter and the Thistle. Legend: CAROLVS . D : G . SCOTIAE . ANGLIAE . FR . ET . HIB . REX. Reverse: Thistle and rose tree combined. Legend: HINC . NOSTRAE . CREVERE . ROSAE. (Hence have our roses grown). Exergue: CORON . 18 . IVNII . 1633. See "Medallic Illustrations" vol.I page 266/60 and also 61 and 59.

According to "Medallic Illustrations" there are slight variations in the dies. The one given to the King was struck in Scottish gold and is described on page 265/59. The following entry occurs in the inventory of pictures and rarities belonging to Charles I and deposited by his orders in the newly erected Cabinet in Whitehall: "Item, a very thick peice being prest, done upon ye King's Coronation in Scotland being with a Thistle tree & letters printed at ye edges, much worn in his Majty's pocket." (Harl. MS. 4718. f. 23.)
