Very interesting bronze box medal of the Duke of Wellington's Continental victories, containing fourteen paper discs inscribed with the names and dates of Wellington's victories. 1815. Medallist unknown. Obverse: Uniformed bust of the Duke of Wellington facing left with head bare. Legend above: DUKE OF WELLINGTON. Reverse: Inscription within a closed wreath: BY HIS/CONSUMMATE SKILL/AS A GENERAL/HE HAS RAISED THE/BRITISH ARMY/TO THE HIGHEST EXCELLENCE, & HIMSELF/THE MOST NOBLE, &/EXALTED HERO,/IN THE ANNALS OF/HISTORY.

One each of the paper discs enclosed in the box is stuck on the inside of the obverse and of the reverse of the box medal. The disc in the inside of the box medal's reverse is inscribed around the edge of the disc: * BRITISH VICTORIES * IN PORTUGAL, SPAIN & FRANCE, 1808 to 1815. In the centre: Roliea & /Vimiera,/Augst 17 & 21,/1808. The disc in the inside of the box medal's obverse is inscribed: Almaraz/May 19,/1812.
The remaining twelve discs are inscribed on both sides and list the following victories: Oporto, May 12, 1809. Corunna, Jany 16, 1809. Talavera, July 27, 1809. Barrosa, March 5, 1811. Condition :-Almost Extremely Fine. All the paper disks are complete and not torn but some are slightly stained with age

This box medal proved extremely popular with members of the British public after the Napoleonic Wars and is still highly collectable to-day.
