| Condition :-Very good condition on the
outside with a good patina. The original gilding on the inside of the goblet
has now reduced to a mellow thin wash of gold. There are small scratches and
other signs of wear at the top end of the inside of the goblet but these are
insignificant and inevitable as they are purely a reflection of the goblet's
age and use. The hallmarks are clear even though hidden in the engraving and
this engraving has partially obliterated the maker's mark |

| Although only the top of the maker's mark is
legible, it is clear that the letters are S H. On inspection of Arthur
Grimwade's reference book "London Goldsmiths 1697-1837" it is obvious
that the only match for this mark is that of Solomon Hougham since the date is
too early for Samuel Hennell. The decoration on this goblet gives it very
strong appeal and its shape makes it very comfortable to hold. Silver goblets
make extremely good drinkingvessels since they keep cold drinks cold and warm
drinks warm. However, this goblet would also make a very attractive flower vase
or container for bon bons. |
