Click here for a larger image Very attractive George III sterling silver wine goblet. London 1807 by Solomon Hougham. The goblet is of campana shape with a spreading circular foot. The lower part of the body is decorated with wide gadrooning, finished with a plain band of silver above. Just below the reeded rim there is a band of dot bright-cut engraving decorated with a Greek key pattern which is interspersed with the design of a plant with three unfolding fern-like fronds on each side of the central bud. Every other plant design is inverted. On one side of the goblet, beneath this band, is a contemporary dot bright-cut engraving of the letter B. On the top step of the foot is a band of bright-cut dot engraving in the centre of which is a flowing design of two looping intertwined lines. The hallmarks are stamped just below the rim and the band of bright-cut engraving was executed afterwards when the goblet was returned to the maker. The engraver managed to avoid the hallmarks on the whole and so they are clear and legible but the maker's mark was partially obliterated.
Maker :- Soloman Hougham
Condition :-Very good condition on the outside with a good patina. The original gilding on the inside of the goblet has now reduced to a mellow thin wash of gold. There are small scratches and other signs of wear at the top end of the inside of the goblet but these are insignificant and inevitable as they are purely a reflection of the goblet's age and use. The hallmarks are clear even though hidden in the engraving and this engraving has partially obliterated the maker's mark
Hallmarked :- London 1807 Hallmarks
Size :- 4.9 inches (12.5 cm) high
3.4 inches (8.7 cm) diameter at rim
Weight :- 5.5 ozt (172.4 g)
Although only the top of the maker's mark is legible, it is clear that the letters are S H. On inspection of Arthur Grimwade's reference book "London Goldsmiths 1697-1837" it is obvious that the only match for this mark is that of Solomon Hougham since the date is too early for Samuel Hennell. The decoration on this goblet gives it very strong appeal and its shape makes it very comfortable to hold. Silver goblets make extremely good drinkingvessels since they keep cold drinks cold and warm drinks warm. However, this goblet would also make a very attractive flower vase or container for bon bons.
