A good pair of George III Irish, sterling silver, fiddle pattern sauce ladles. Dublin 1805. By John Pittar. The bowls are a generous oval shape. The ends of each of the front stems have been later engraved with a family crest of a mailed right arm holding aloft a spurred and mailed right leg. The hallmarks are clearly struck on the end of the reverse of the stems and consist of Hibernia, the crowned harp, the date letter for Dublin 1805 and the maker's mark. On one of the ladles, the maker's mark has been very rubbed, possibly mis-struck.
Maker :- John Pittar

The later engraving of a family crest is often not a sinister fault. It frequently occurred because a member of the family acquired a crest at a later date and so had it engraved on all the family silver. On these ladles there is no sign that anything has been erased before the crests were engraved. The fiddle pattern on the stems have that typically Irish, elongated, style. John Pittar was one of the best known Irish silversmiths making flatware during that period.
