The Lord Mayor and Sheriff's Committee was formed annually. The first Committee was formed in 1825, so this medal is a relatively early one. The Committee consisted of twelve members and was chaired by the Lord Mayor. Each Committee member wore a badge such as this one with his name on it. The only exception were the years 1831 - 1832 and 1876 when Committee members carried a wand instead of wearing a medal. The Committee's duties were to organise "The Lighting Up Dinner" to thank the retiring Lord Mayor. It also arranged the Lord Mayor's banquet, which was always held in the Guildhall on the Saturday after the new Lord Mayor's election. The Committee also had to provide entertainment for "The Lord Mayor's Show" (now arranged by a Pageant Master) and also organise special receptions for visiting Dignitaries such as the Shah of Persia and others. More detailed information can be obtained by reading the relevant Lord Mayor's diary in the City Records Office at the Guildhall.
