Click here for a larger image Very simple but striking William and Mary gavel made of Lignum Vitae and mounted with three unmarked silver bands. Circa 1690. The wood is totally plain except for a central engraved circle at each end of the head and at the end of the handle. The handle has been fitted into the head without the use of screws or nails. Each end of the head is mounted with a plain band of silver 0.55 inches (1.4 cm) wide. The end of the handle is mounted with a band of silver 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide with one plain edge and a crenellated edge nearest to the end of the handle.

Condition :-Extremely good condition. Signs of use at both ends of the gavel head but otherwise, the wood and the silver are unblemished apart from slight signs of shrinkage where the head joins the handle
Circa :- 1690
Size :- 8.9 inches (22.6 cm) long x 4.1 inches (10.4 cm) wide at gavel head

This is a very interesting and tactile object which has obviously been very well cared for over the years. The gavel feels extremely comfortable in the hand and has a perfect balance.
