Click here for a larger image Charming and typically Irish sterling silver bright cut bowl on foot. Dublin 1792 by Matthew West. The circular rim has a reeded edge and so, too, has the circular base of the foot. There is a bright cut border of stylised flowers and leaves in the Classical style just below the rim. The body is decorated with bright cut festoons of flowers and leaves between Classical points. There are two oviform cartouches with pointed ends on either side of the bowl. One of them is empty. The other is engraved with the family crest of a heart with perpendicular lines (red), surrounded by two branches with leaves. The plain foot is engraved with a bright cut chain of rounded arches. The full set of hallmarks are struck on the lower edge of the band of decoration beneath the rim. They can be read clearly although the details of Hibernia have been flattened.
Maker :- Matthew West
Condition :-Good condition with a wonderful patina. The crispness of the engraving has softened gently but the hallmarks are good and clear, although the details of Hibernia have flattened. The silver flaked slightly in two places on the inside of the bowl during manufacture and has not been smoothed out. However, this is quite acceptable and adds to the object's charm

3.9 inches (9.9 cm) diameter of foot
5 inches (12.7 cm ) diameter of rim

It is difficult to specify what exact purpose this bowl on foot was put to in Ireland in 1792. It may have been used as a sugar bowl or it may have been used for different purposes. Certainly, to-day, this bowl would have a variety of uses. To mention just a few, it would make an ideal receptacle for whipped cream, cherries or grapes, bon bons or biscuits, any thick sauce or ice when serving drinks
