Very elegantly executed small silver medal struck in honour of William III by John Roettier at the Royal Mint, 1689. Obverse: Bust of William III, right, laureate, with hair long and with no drapery. Legend: GVLIEMVS . III . DEI . GRA. Reverse: Full meridian sun. Legend above: NON . DEVIO. (I do not deviate). See Medallic Illustrations, vol I, 695/92. Maker :- John Roettier

This medal very rightly compliments William III for pursuing his object with the same undeviating course as the sun. The medal was probably a "pocket piece" and as such would have been subjected to quite some wear. It is therefore remarkable that its condition to-day is almost Extremely Fine. This medal was struck as one of a group of laudatory medals which formed a concerted public relations campaign to honour and increase the public image of William III, William and Mary and some to honour Mary alone. Most of these medals were struck in the first year of William and Mary's reign.
