| In spite of strenuous efforts on the part of James II, the Treaty of Ryswick rejected the Stuart claim to the throne and the English Crown was firmly placed on William's head. James II protested against the treaty and issued several medals to rally his supporters to his cause and to stress the legitimacy of his son, Prince James and the fact that there was a continuity to the Stuart line. A large number of these medals were sent to London after the Peace of Ryswick to be distributed freely among the supporters of the Stuarts. Norbert Roettier was the third son of John Roettier and was appointed one of the engravers to the Mint in London in 1690. In 1695, he was accused of abstracting certain dies and fled to France where he was appointed Engraver General of the Monies of France in 1703. After leaving England, he executed a number of dies for coins, medals and medalets for the exiled Stuart family. | ||
