Skewers usually came in sized sets but even pairs are difficult to find now. The finials come in numerous designs, which makes them very collectable and they are most often in ring form in order to facilitate the skewer's withdrawal from a joint of meat. By 1790, skewers had become more sharp-edged and these are now widely used as paper knives. No elegant writing table or desk should be without one.
