Nathaniel Mills , (b.1811 - died 1873) rapidly achieved pre-eminence among the box makers of his time. He appears to have stopped silversmithing in 1855. His output of vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and other boxes and card cases was extremely prolific and each piece is distinctive for its superior quality. He is well known for his boxes
engraved with flat or high relief illustrations of castles and other famous buildings. The design on the lid of this vinaigrette is charming and particularly collectable because of its unusual style.
