George I sterling silver toy fire-irons of very good gauge.
London circa 1725. The irons have a pointed pick above the curving shoulders
with which logs could be moved on the fire. The straight arms attached to the
shoulders end in flat-sided ovoid pans and on the outside of each of these is
stamped the maker's mark.
Maker :- David Clayton of London
Condition :-Excellent. The gauge of silver
is extremely good. The only hallmark is the maker's mark which is stamped on
the outside of each pan at the base of the handles. One is very crisp, the
other is only slightly worn.

The eighteenth century was the peak period for the
production of silver toys in England. David Clayton only made silver toys and
his work was extremely prolific and skilled and always of very high quality.
Apart from the great master, George Manjoy, who preceded him by some years,
David Clayton was by far and away the most outstanding silver toy specialist in
England in his time.
