Very elegant George III, sterling silver, Exeter Hanoverian hash spoon with shell back. The spoon is of a very good weight and has a very good patina. The hallmarks are stamped at the base of the handle and are clearly legible even though three of them are a little rubbed. The end of the handle curves upwards in the front, in the Hanoverian manner. There is a contemporary initial engraved at the end of the back of the handle in script, which is probably J*T. The base of the back of the bowl is decorated with a very attractive rococo shell.
Maker :- Joseph Freeman

Condition :-Very good indeed with a lovely patina. The maker's mark is very crisp. The lion passant assay mark is good and clear, while the other three marks are a little worn but very readable. The shell at the back of the base of the bowl is very well defined
Hallmarked :- Exeter 1761 Hallmarks
Size :- 15 inches (38.1 cm) long
Weight :- 6.12 ozt (190.4 g)
This spoon is beautifully made. It has perfect balance between the size of the bowl and the length of the handle. Also, it is very rare to have a decoration on the back of an Exeter serving spoon. This is a very pleasing piece all round, which would grace any table.
