| There was a resurgence in the growth of the coal trade in the north of England around the 1790s. This cup was obviously given to mark a celebration. It was probably not sent to Assay in order to save money for the donors and was given to a friendly silversmith to make. The flaking inside the cup beneath the gilding was probably not tidied up because the emphasis was on making this gift as heavy a weight of silver as possible. | ||
