| This medal is one of three slight variations of the official coronation medal, all by Natter and was made in silver and bronze only. The gold medal is one of the other two variations. It is presumed that Natter's coronation medals were struck in Germany. On the instructions of the King, the Royal Mint was to play no part in the striking of Natter's medals other than acting as financial intermediary between the King and the engraver. George III succeeded to the throne on the death of his grandfather on 25th October, 1760. The coronation ceremony took place in Westminster Abbey on 22nd September, 1761 and lasted six hours. According to the "Gentleman's Magazine" for 1761, this silver medal was thrown among the congregation during the Homage by the Treasurer of the Household. The pin which turns this medal into a brooch is contemporary and is made to swivel so that either side of the medal can be foremost. | ||
