Click here for a larger image George II punch ladle with a circular, sterling silver, cauldron-shaped bowl. Two lots of initials are engraved on the ouside of the bowl. One, in the centre of the back of the bowl: M above TP with star between, is engraved in the contemporary style, the second initials are below the bowl's rim on the right of the handle: JFC in a decorative script typical of the second half of the 18th century. 3 inches (7.6cm) of the handle is in silver, where it is attached to the turned wooden handle by two pins.
Maker :- James Goodwin
Condition :-Very good. Slight bruising in bowl and silver part of handle, due to age and use. The wooden handle is in very good condition and the silver is of very heavy gauge. The full hallmarks inside the centre of the bowl are very clear, except for the G of the maker's mark which is worn and was probably mis-struck.
Hallmarked :- London 1728 Hallmarks .
Size :- 13.7 inches (34.8cm) long x 2.5 inches (6.4cm) bowl diameter.
Weight :- 2.8ozt (88.3g) including wooden handle.
This is a pleasing piece and rare in being so early. By 1740, the circular or ovoid bowl gave way to a variety of shaped bowls. By 1760, the twisted, whalebone, handle became usual, while the bowls became smaller and thinner and were often only partly marked or even unmarked. Punch bowls make very popular presents.
