Click here for a larger image Highly decorative Victorian silver and silver gilt Welsh badge. Circa 1872. Unmarked. The badge is shaped like a star with five segments. A silver gilt band decorated with a zig-zag pattern runs along the outside edge of the front of the badge. Within each segment there is a leek in plain silver (the emblem for Wales). The leeks and segments are supported on a circular silver gilt band on which is embossed a motto in Welsh. Translated into English, the motto says "A PURE CONSCIENCE IS A SAFEGUARD TO ITS POSSESSOR". In the centre of the front of the badge is the pierced monogram in frosted silver of Colonel Ivor, John, Caradoc Herbert, C.B., C. M. G., of Llanarth Court, Monmouthshire. The reverse of the badge is perfectly plain and has a pin and hook fixed to it. The central circular band is engraved with the date JULY 15TH 1872.

Condition :-Extremely fine with a very substantial gauge of silver and excellent workmanship
Circa :- 1872
Size :- 1.9 inches (4.8 cm) diameter

Col. Herbert was born on July 16, 1851. From the date on the back of the badge, it can be assumed that this badge was somehow linked with the celebration of the Colonel's 21st birthday. This is a very fine badge indeed. No expense was spared in employing the finest craftsmanship and using the most generous gauge of silver when making this badge.
