Click here for a larger image Very striking Victorian silver Scottish plaid brooch. Circa 1880. Unmarked. The centre of the brooch is the cut-out crest on a mount of a demi-savage, wreathed about the head and waist, holding a dagger in his right hand and a key of the last in his left. The border is fashioned in the shape of a belt with a buckle. The motto, or "battlecry" is inscribed on the top half of the belt:
"FURTH FORTUNE AND FILL THE FETTERS".
 
Condition :-Excellent, with very crisp definition

Size :- 2.3 inches (5.84cm) wide x 2.9 inches (7.37cm) long
Weight :- 0.97 ozt (30 g)
The motto and crest on this brooch are those of the Duke of Atholl but they are also shared by other members of the Atholl branch of the Murray clan. Plaid brooches were worn by the Scots to keep their plaids in place on their shoulders. Due to its relatively small size, this brooch may well have been made for a lady.
