French, Louis XV ivory snuff box in a curved shell shape with
two gold hinges. Circa 1720. The box is exquisitely carved in the prevalent
high rococo style of the period. The carving on both the lid and the base has a
shell motif interspersed with chinese figures and faces, shell-shaped fans,
bunches of fruit and of flowers, all done in a very beautiful stylised
way.
Condition :-Excellent, with very crisp
relief to the carving. A slight blemish on the base by the right hand
hinge
Circa :- 1720
Size :- 2.7 inches (6.86 cm)
long x 1.8 inches (4.57 cm) wide
The high quality of the carving and the gold
hinges suggest that this box was made by a master box maker. It is quite
probable that this snuff box was made in Dieppe which had a flourishing ivory
carving industry at that time.
