George II silver and niello Scottish plaid brooch
decorated with a Celtic design. The engraved pin is fixed to the brooch on a
bar so that it can revolve from front to back. The back of the brooch is plain
and bears the contemporary engraving of a date "1752". Two sets of
contemporary initials are also engraved on the reverse: L * Mc L and M * MA.
Condition :-Wonderful condition with virtually all the
niello intact. The silver has a very pleasing patina.

These brooches were worn by the Scots to keep
their plaids in place on their shoulders. Early ones, such as this one, were
not hallmarked. They make very decorative collectors' items and this particular
brooch is in such good condition that it would make a worthy addition to any
collection.
