George I rectangular ivory snuff box with two silver hinges. Circa 1720. The carved lid depicts a Greek mythology scene of Leda, wife of Tyndareus, king of Sparta, being seduced by Zeus, head of the Gods and ultimate ruler of heaven and earth, who came to her disguised as a swan. The edge of the lid is bordered by a thin band of reeding, while the base of the box is totally plain.

Condition :-Excellent, with very crisp engraving. Just one small hair crack in the top left reeding of the border of the lid. However, this is only superficial and does not come through to the inside of the lid
Circa :- 1720
Size :- 3.1 inches (7.9 cm) long x 2.1 inches (5.3 cm) wide x 0.4 inches (1 cm) high

The fruit of the union of Leda and Zeus was Helen of Troy. This is a charming box, beautifully carved, which would look very good on its own or in a group of other "objects" on a small table or in a display case.
