Attractive Victorian silver swimming prize medal. A cream and maroon ribbon is attached to the medal's suspension ring and, at the other end, to an engraved silver bar with long pin. Obverse: A wreath of oak leaves tied together at the base with a ribbon encloses the following inscription. "THE HUMPHERY MEMORIAL MEDAL/Instituted in 1880/BY THE/MISSES C & J. HUMPHERY/As a token of affection for their late Father/HON TEACHER OF SWIMMING TO THE SERPENTINE CLUB/to be swum for by all Bathers Annually/ IN THE SERPENTINE/ WON BY/ E. PIKE/ 2nd PRIZE/ 19th August 1896" Reverse: A woman swimming towards the shore in choppy water. On the shore on the left are two castle towers with a figure standing at the top of one holding a lit torch. Across the sky, above the landscape, is engraved in Latin "PERGE ITA UT FIT". Beneath the landscape at the base of the medal is stamped "LEANDER/MEDAL"
