Strikingly executed bronze medal by Thomas Wyon senior to celebrate Nelson's Victory of the Nile. 1798. In Extremely Fine condition. Obverse: Victory seated in front of a pyramid, holding a plaque with the bust of Lord Nelson. A lion, a palm tree and a harp alongside. Legend - VIRTUTE NIHIL OBSTAT & ARMIS (Nothing withstands valour and arms). In Exergue - VICTORY OF THE NILE/ AUGt. 1. 1798. Reverse:- A shield and foul anchor on which is written NOV . 29 LAUS DEO 1798 (November 29 Praise to God, 1798). An eye above with sun rays. Legend - SUB HOC SIGNO VINCES. Mr Brown says that the date on the reverse of this medal is possibly an error for Nelson's birth date, 29 September. The "Gentleman's Magazine" records that prayers were offered for the victory in St Paul's Cathedral on 21st October 1789 and on the following two Sundays.
