Interesting GEORGE IV Silver Sea-Coal Meter Badge. Unmarked.

Makers mark AD stamped on the ring attachment. England circa 1824.

The badge is of shaped form with foliate scroll decoration and an armorial with motto beneath in the centre. The reverse is inscribed James Jacks Deputy Sea Coal Meter, elected 20th Feb 1824.

The armorial bears the symbols of a three-masted collier, two cauldrons, a balance and an imperial crown above the shield of the City of London. This is believed to be the authorised insignia of an early 19th century City of London Coal-Meter.

Coal Meters were officials of the Corporation of London, appointed under a Law of 1807 to measure and assess the quality of coals imported into the Port of London. These positions were abolished in 1831 as it was decided the advantage to the public was not equivalent to the cost of administering the regulations.
