Very unusual and attractive George III silver mote spoon circa 1765
The stem of the spoon has a spiral design ending in a prominent spike. The bowl has diagonal piercing which has been done in two parts leaving a small piece of solid silver for support. The rim has a wavy edge which has been created by the diagonal piercing of the bowl and the tip of the bowl is pierced in a matching design. A contemporary family crest of a right hand holding a bunch of fructed acorns is engraved on the front between the bowl and the stem.
Mote spoons were very popular in the 18th Century when the spouts of the teapots were straight. The spike was used to unblock the tea leaves from the spout. They are collectors pieces and this a very fine example.
