WILIAM IV SET OF 6 IMPRESSIVE OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE CANDLESTICKS WITH AN IMPORTANT PROVENANCE.

WILIAM IV SET OF 6 IMPRESSIVE OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE CANDLESTICKS WITH AN IMPORTANT PROVENANCE.

£18,000

Elegant, substantial and highly decorative set of 6 William IV Old Sheffield Plate candlesticks.
Circa 1830. There is no maker's mark but each candlestick has the number 13 engraved on the flange of the base.
PROVENANCE: COLLECTION OF MARQUESSES OF LONDONDERRY.
These candlesticks are remarkable because they are not made in the traditional method used for Old Sheffield Plate and although they are 11.6 inches high, their circumference is more generous than is usual for their height, without any loss of elegance. Each candlestick stands on a domed, part fluted circular weighted base with a beaded, serially fluted stem. The waisted nozzle has a foliate drip-pan and beaded border.
Formerly the property of the Marquesses of Londonderry, it is quite likely that there were more than six candlesticks.
They have a very festive air and the beading on the candlesticks would ensure that as much light as possible would be bounced back into the room. There has been light restoration work but the candlesticks are in very good condition and in keeping with their age.
Height: 11.6 inches (29.5cm)
Diameter: 5..6 inches at the base (14.2cm).
