Very decorative and extremely well made George III sterling silver swing-handled sugar basket. Made by Henry Chawner in London in 1791. The body of the basket is octagonally shaped, as is the foot. The handle is shaped and reeded and there is a band of reeding on the rim of the basket and the side of the foot. The basket has bright-cut decoration and is engraved on one side with script initials JSN and on the other with the slightly later crest of a Cornish chough. The full set of hallmarks are very clear on the underside of the foot and the handle is struck with a lion passant mark



CREST:- CORNISH for Robert Stribling Cornish, 1788-1871 of Exeter. Architect. Married Marianne Powning in 1814. Was granted arms in 1847. Became Mayor of Exeter in 1852/3.



Size:- 5.5 inches (14 cm) high to top of handle x 4.9 inches (12.5 cm) long x 3.9 inches (9.9cm) wide at rim
