Delicate and very attractive 17th Century chased posy ring of high grade gold.
Makers mark: R. Circa 1650
The outside of the ring is chased with foliate scrolls. The inside of the ring is engraved in contemporary script Live to love Eternally, followed by the stamped makers mark R.
The name posy was derived from the amatory inscription which this type of ring bears which was usually in rhyme or poesy. These rings have been recorded in Roman times and reached their peak of popularity in England in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were usually given by both men and women as an expression of regard, friendship, attachment or love. By the mid 17th and the 18th centuries, most posy rings were used as wedding rings.
